Most of the seniors we assist live on less than $900 a month!  Our Free Groceries for Seniors program helps stretch household budgets so there is enough quality food to eat everyday.

New Mexico is one of the worst states in the nation for senior hunger and for senior malnutrition. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one out of every seven Bernalillo County seniors live below the poverty level. Silver Horizons’ Free Groceries for Seniors program provides free groceries to about 3,500 seniors each month, and to nearly 1,300 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising.

Our Free Groceries for Seniors program helps keep nutritious foods available to low-income seniors who must make the choice between buying groceries, paying their utility bills, paying for necessary medications, or covering other life expenses. At Silver Horizons, we believe our aging and elderly citizens in New Mexico shouldn’t have to make that choice. If you, or a senior you know, is in need of food, please call us at 505-884-3881.

Senior Food Markets
Silver Horizons provides free groceries throughout the month at various locations. Low-income seniors (50+) receive fresh produce, meat, bread, toiletry items, pet food, in addition to nonperishable food items. Each month, about 3,500 seniors receive free groceries, along with about 1,300 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising. Senior Food Markets are open to all seniors regardless of where they live.

Partnership with Meals on Wheels Albuquerque
Silver Horizons, in partnership with Meals on Wheels Albuquerque, works to ensure low-income, home-bound seniors receive nutritious food to help them cover the weekend. MOW provides meals Monday thru Friday.  Silver Horizons provides “Weekend Survival Kits” that are delivered by MOW volunteers.  These “kits” contain nonperishable food items that are easy-to-prepare.
