2007 Home Repair and Home Retrofit Assistance: In collaboration with the City of Albuquerque & Bernalillo County Department of Senior Affairs, SHNM assisted 640 low-income, in-crisis and/or frail senior citizens by purchasing building materials for home repairs like roof and plumbing leaks, plaster and dry-wall repairs, exterior stuccoing, fixing broken doors, locks and windows, painting, and re-tiling. SH also purchased materials and equipment for home retrofits including 8 wheelchair ramps and 3 wide walker-steps, 33 grab-bars, 24 hand-held showers, 8 commode risers, 13 frames for support around commodes, 17 shower and bath chairs, 5 bed-side commodes, 7 clamp-on bath rails, 3 banisters, 8 transfer benches and 1 quadracane.
2007 Home Chores Assistance: The year 2007 started with heavy winter weather for which the mayor mobilized the DSA Home Services employees to clear snow and ice off front steps and walkways of elderly citizens. In January and February snow was removed for 49 clients and ice melt scattered for 80 clients. SHNM purchased 440 pounds of Roadrunner Ice Melt for this purpose. The snows were followed by a spate of roof leaks. April – July were dedicated largely to evaporative cooler maintenance.
2007 Home Services Staff Support: From August 2006 – June 2007 SHNM provided $12,125.89 ($9,452.19 in ’07) to employ for 11 months an office assistant for the DSA Home Services Project. The person in this position schedules home repairs, retrofits and chores, acts as a “go-for” for the workers in the field, expedites the work orders and maintains the records and accountability for the funding SHNM provides to the Home Services Project. Keeping this position filled has helped the Home Services Project become more efficient. The waiting period experienced by DSA Home Services clients has gone from as much as eight weeks to less than two weeks.
