Your organization can participate by adopting a facility for the holidays. The cheer you bring can be as much as a full-blown holiday party with entertainment, refreshments and gifts for the residents, or it can be as simple as taking up a collection to help Silver Horizons stage parties and provide gifts.

The parties are wonderfully gratifying. The senior residents and the staff are always thrilled with the energy and holiday cheer that outside groups bring in. Be assured that Silver Horizons will be on hand to guide you every step of the way. We can also provide your group with a place to wrap and store gifts and supplies as you gather them.

Here’s how it works:

1. October & November: Contact Silver Horizons (Lori at 242-1946) and ask for an assignment of a facility for your group. Facilities range from 6 to 100 residents so we will ask for your guidance in selecting a facility of a size that your group will be comfortable with.

2. October/November: Raise money and seek donations for your party.

3. October/November: Talk to the facility director about what activities the residents would enjoy: a party, music, dancing, refreshments, their own pot-luck, specially requested gifts for individual residents, general gifts for the facility as a whole. Arrange a date and time for your party or holiday visit. Arrange for entertainment and refreshments. Please keep Silver Horizons informed of your plans.

4. November: At the larger facilities Silver Horizons will distribute an RSVP sheet to each resident of your facility informing them of your party and asking them to RSVP. The form also can give the residents the opportunity to “wish” for something that they really would like or need. Your group shops to fulfill the seniors’ requests. Whether or not your group provides “wished for” gifts is up to you, but it is a gratifying option. Your group has the satisfaction of knowing that you fulfilled actual wishes!

5. Late November/Early December: Acquire the gifts and wrap them in a festive way. Arrange for someone to play Santa Claus if your group is so inclined.6. We’re not sure Polaroid film is still available but in the past we have had a lot of fun taking Polaroid pictures of the seniors receiving their gifts. They then get to keep their picture. We may have to go digital this year.

7. Arrange for your members to attend the party at your adopted facility and take your holiday cheer there at the agreed upon date and time. And have a wonderful time! SHNM was founded in 1980 as the Senior Foundation. Now, 28 years later, we continue to work to support and honor senior citizens in CABQ and Bernalillo County.
